Dyslexia in Secondary School (By Jenny Cogan & Mary Flecker)
This text explains why a dyslexic person often underachieves and shows that if the underlying problems are identified, adjustments in teaching and learning methods can make all the difference. Specialist teachers and parents, who often feel frustrated in their attempts to translate educational psychologists\' suggestions into action, should discover practical ways to help with school work. Examples are taken from the curriculum and used to show how to plan an essay, learn vocabulary and read to remember, so that the student can use the method to succeed in the short term through good marks and in the long term by generalizing from their own success. Focusing as it does on the way we learn \"Dyslexia in Secondary School\" should interest teachers and all students - not just those with specific learning difficulties.

While much has been written about dyslexia and literacy, little has been written about dyslexia and counselling. Good counselling remediates problems in relationships. Good teaching remediates problems in literacy. When the principles of effective counselling combine with the principles of effective literacy teaching, then dyslexia becomes not only manageable but potent, a source of individual strength and wisdom.
This book is designed to be a practical resource for busy counsellors and therapists working with dyslexic clients in the time-constrained world of modern therapy. It is also a reference for anyone who is interested in the counselling perspective on dyslexia: parents, teachers and anyone working in, for example primary care or the social services.

Dyslexia and Vision (By Bruce J W Evans)
The role of Visual factors in dyslexia has been the subject of controversy for many years. Recently, it has been claimed that some cases of dyslexia benefit from visual treatments, such as eye exercises, patching, and coloured glasses. Dyslexia and Vision summarises the main visual factors that have been claimed to be associated with dyslexia and examines the evidence relating to these claims. Throughout the book, an attempt is made to adopt an "evidence based" approach, concentrating on objective scientific evidence and noting where this is lacking. This analysis reveals which visual factors are associated with dyslexia and notes that although some visual treatments may be appropriate in certain cases, visual treatments are not cures for dyslexia. Dyslexia and Vision is written for people who do not have an expert knowledge of eyes and vision, primarily for teachers, educational psychologists, and paediatricians. For the more technically minded, appendices are included which list the scientific publications supporting the statements made in the body of the book.

Early Reading Development & Dyslexia (By Valerie Muter)
This text focuses on how children learn to read and on the difficulties some children have in acquiring this important skill. It concentrates specifically on the very beginning stages of reading development - that is, in the 4-7 year age group.|This text begins by considering current ideas about how young children begin to acquire reading skills, and draws particularly on research that focuses on the language abilities that they need to have inplace in order to facilitate early reading. The link between phonological abilities and the acquisition of letter knowledge is strongly highlighted, but attention is also paid to other reading-related language skills and to the role that parents and teachers play in promoting good early reading development. Later chapters focus in the importance of early identification of reading problems through screening and assessment procedures. Effective teaching of beginning reading skills within the classroom is discussed, prior to a review of current specialist teaching methods designed to improve reading progress in early-diagnosed young dyslexic children.
Contents:
Phonology, reading and alphabetic principle; reading, verbal memory and naming skills; phonological difficulties and reading failure - a case study; risk factors, protective influences and compensatory strategies; phonological deficits in dyslexia; children at risk of dyslexia; screening for early reading failure; preventing reading failure; a model for the assessment of reading impairment in young children; teaching young dyslexic children; assessing and teaching the young poor reader - four case studies; questions we still have to answer.

Ready Made Lessons for Pupils with Dyslexic Type Difficulties (By Penny Tolson)
Ages: 5 - 11
Three books based on Beve Hornsby’s “Alpha to Omega”, which teaches English from a phonetic viewpoint. Roughly 80% of our language can be taught through phonics – sounding out the letters and blending those sounds together to read and spell words.
The author worked for five years as a Special Needs Co-ordinator in an inner-city primary school for, and using this system, as laid out in her books, 98% of the children gained Level 4 or above in their SATS at Yr 6. This is way above the national average of roughly 64%.
The books offer a structured multi-sensory teaching programme, where only a small amount of new knowledge is introduced at a time. This guarantees success. Each new lesson builds on the previous lesson, but takes another step forward.
Book1 (ages 5 - 8) teaches reading and Spelling from a phonetic view point. This book contains 28 lessons which focus on two areas: blending sounds together to read words in a systematic way, and learning the spelling rules of the English language, again through a phonic approach.
Lesson One begins with only five sounds and the word “the”. The teaching relies on dictating both the words and sentences and using an alphabet set or alphabet cards, which can be made (clue cards). This is explained in the “Introduction”.
Book 2 (ages 8-10) continues the structured programme with only a small amount of new letter sounds (phonemes) and spelling rules; “w” makes /a/ say /o/ or when to double the last consonant, “hop”, “hopped” etc. There are 28 lessons in this book.
Book 3 (ages 10 - 11) completes the set with more complex rules like soft “c” and “g” when followed by “e”, “i” or “y”, the “tion”, “cial”, “cious”, “ssion”and “cient” rules. This book contains 30 lessons which clarify many English spelling and grammar rules.

Summary:
There is now a greater need than ever before to assess, record and respond appropriately to the special needs of individuals. Specialist teachers, SENCOs and learning support managers - all have a statutory duty to see that individual needs are identified, from the early years to further and higher education.
This book focuses on the purposes, principles and practicalities of assessing for dyslexia across successive age groups, exploring the changing assessment issues and specific assessment needs. It looks at the available types of assessments at each stage, explaining how to interpret results and how and when to involve other professionals. Throughout, special emphasis is placed upon the need to cooperate and communicate effectively with others - pupils/students, their parents, class teachers, administrators and fellow professionals - to ensure that appropriate intervention and follow-up support are forthcoming.
Assessments are needed to diagnose, to plan intervention, to inform school/college policies, to support claims for funding, to justify special arrangements in examinations, and more. These very different purposes require specialist teachers and support managers to have a firm grasp of relevant legislation and professional guidelines, to select appropriate assessments and provide reports that will meet their intended purpose.
Assessing for Dyslexia will enable you to achieve this! Down to earth, and with numerous examples, this book provides the practical guidance needed by specialist teachers and educational professionals in training, as well as by SENCOs and learning support staff working in schools and colleges.
* Hands-on, down to earth and with lots of examples
* Purpose-written for the OCR Specific Learning Difficulties and other professional training courses, by the OCR course verifiers
* The definitive guide to all aspects of assessing for dyslexia, in schools and colleges
* Authoritative: the editors and contributors are THE leading advisers, trainers, consultants and examiners
* Published in association with Patoss - the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties
* For specialist teachers and SENCOs working across the full age range, from early years to FE/HE
