What is
Soapbox?
This five
disk package aims to help learning by emphasising the relationship between
the spelling pattern and the vowel sound. Each word is pronounced, the
consonant pattern is emphasised by highlightning, and contrasts are made
between words with short and long vowel sounds.
The pupil
is presented with a word in the center of the screen which they can listen
to and must match to one of the surrounding boxes. If the word is dragged
to the correct shape then it can be optionally spelled by the computer
using a high quality sampled alphabet.
The screen
now changes to display the letters of the alphabet in an arch around the
central panel where the word must be either typed or spelled using the
mouse pointer and the lettered tiles.
Digital sampled
speech is used throughout the program as an aid to reinforcement. Teachers
may also create their own word lists to use within the program (complete
with speech sample files - sampler required).
